Democrats lead generic congressional ballot by 7 points in new poll
Voters nationwide favor Democrats over Republicans by seven percentage points, according to a survey released on Tuesday. The findings suggest an advantage for the party three weeks before Election Day.
The NewsNation-Decision Desk HQ survey was conducted by research platform TrueDot.ai. It showed Democratic candidates leading Republicans 49 percent to 42 percent. Another 8 percent of voters remain undecided.
Respondents also answered which party did more to earn their vote. The Democratic Party received 46 percent. The GOP took 40 percent. Nearly 7 percent chose Independents. Another 8 percent selected none of the above.
Nexstar owns both NewsNation and The Hill. Chris Cuomo hosts Decision Desk 2026 Have Your Say: A NewsNation Town Hall on Tuesday night. The broadcast will review the full survey results.
Rahm Emanuel, Stephen A. Smith and Steve Bannon will join the program. They will discuss the numbers during the broadcast. Forecasters expect Democrats to take back the House in November.
Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 76 percent probability of winning the House. It gives Republicans a 24 percent chance to hold it. Geoffrey Skelley serves as chief elections analyst at DDHQ.
“The big question is if the lead grows more,” Skelley said.
Skelley noted campaigns have limited time left to alter the race.
“You’re basically out of time for much to change. At this point, it is probably more just about engaging the voters in your party as best you can, and making some final cases to voters who might normally or might have in the past voted for your party, if you’re Republicans in particular, and then trying to make the case for why they should show up again.”
The survey measured national views on political figures and issues. President Donald Trump received a 38 percent favorable rating. His unfavorable rating reached 60 percent nationwide.
Respondents identified their top concerns:
- Inflation at 28 percent
- Jobs and the economy at 20 percent
- Immigration and the border at 12 percent
Trump recently reached a deal with Russia. The agreement pumps 300,000 tons of diesel to international markets. Skelley said he was “very skeptical” the move would shift voters before November.
The deal caused bipartisan criticism. Skelley commented on public reaction to the agreement.
“Americans don’t … necessarily have a very popular opinion of Russia, and so some may look askance at this move as well,” he added.
Control of the upper chamber remains uncertain. Democrats must flip four seats to win the Senate. Observers view the Senate battle as a toss-up.
The contest runs through several states:
- Ohio
- Alaska
- Iowa
- Texas
Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats a 56 percent chance to win the Senate. It gives Republicans a 44 percent chance. Surveys test national political sentiment before voters cast ballots. Campaign organizations track these numbers to guide voter turnout efforts across the country.
TrueDot.ai surveyed 974 likely national voters between Oct. 5 and Oct. 9. The margin of error is 3.2 percentage points.
