Cost of American dream rises to around $5.3M, report shows

Households across the country face a lifetime price tag near $5.3 million to reach traditional milestones, a report shows. The estimate reflects growing expenses for typical families pursuing long-term financial security nationwide. This total is reportedly up by 4% from last year, according to a new Investopedia report.

The total includes several major lifetime milestones:

  • Owning a home
  • Buying new cars
  • Raising two children and sending them to college
  • Retiring comfortably
  • Paying for health care
  • Having a wedding
  • Owning pets
  • Taking a yearly vacation

A new Gallup poll found that 69% of Americans still believe they will achieve these life goals. A single paycheck reportedly will not come close to covering the total expense. Prices across the country continue to surge, according to the report.

Three specific milestones account for nearly 70% of the entire estimate. These expenses are owning a home, buying new cars, and paying for retirement. Homeownership costs now stand at $1,275,782. That figure rose from $1,184,493 last year.

Doug Flynn is the founding partner of Flynn Zito Capital Management. Flynn said the biggest percentage increase is the cost of raising children.

Raising two children and sending them to college now costs $953,763, according to the report. That total was $876,092 in 2025. It went up significantly.

Financial research reports assess consumer price changes across the country over time. Analysts track major household milestones through routine surveys and economic data. These studies evaluate the overall buying power of family paychecks.

Families across the country continue to plan around these shifting lifetime figures.
