Isaiah Martinez held without bail in downtown Albuquerque shooting

Isaiah Martinez will remain in jail in Albuquerque while he awaits trial, a district judge ruled Friday. The decision keeps the 18-year-old in custody following an early-morning downtown shooting that left a man in critical condition.

Second Judicial District Judge Emeterio Rudolfo issued the order during a pretrial detention hearing in Bernalillo County. Martinez will stay at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Prosecutors argued that Martinez poses an ongoing danger to the public.

The Albuquerque Police Department responded early Sunday morning to an automated ShotSpotter alert. The system recorded 17 gunshots near Central Avenue and 8th Street NW. Officers found an adult male with severe gunshot wounds. Emergency medical workers took the victim to a local trauma center.

Police said the gunfire followed a street dispute near downtown Albuquerque. Martinez was with 18-year-old Matthew Akugue, according to court documents. Detectives said the two men walked to a vehicle after an argument with the victim.

The car then approached the man near the roundabout at Central and 8th Street. Police allege that Martinez pointed a gun from the vehicle. He fired multiple rounds at close range before the car drove away.

Detectives located both Martinez and Akugue and took them into custody. Formal indictments and trial preparations will proceed through the Second Judicial District Court.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
