PNM logs 46 copper theft reports from New Mexico businesses
PNM says it received 46 reports of copper theft from businesses across New Mexico in 2025, with the utility using September to call attention to the problem. The utility has designated September as Copper Theft Awareness Month, warning that copper’s high market value has made it a target for thieves at homes and businesses.
The metal is widely used in electrical wiring. PNM said when copper wires leading to a transformer are stolen, customers may find that even though their power is on, it fluctuates, electronics spark, or there is arcing around the transformer or meter box.
The utility is urging anyone who sees a transformer that may have been tampered with to avoid touching it and to call PNM immediately at 888-342-5766.
To report suspected copper theft, PNM advises submitting an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP (505-843-7867) or at P3tips.com/531.
PNM offered the following tips to help deter copper theft at homes:
- Illuminate your yard by using motion sensors.
- Install security lighting or cameras around electrical equipment.
- Don’t leave equipment or metals exposed and unsecured.
