Lonely Planet names New Mexico among 50 best places to visit

A major travel guide selected New Mexico for its global catalog of top trip destinations. The selection highlights state landmarks to help travelers plan their vacations for the year 2027. The publication chose the Land of Enchantment based on reviews from widely traveled writers and editors.

A writer for Lonely Planet praised the local culture and terrain.

“Touch down in New Mexico (spaceship optional) and gear up for a Southwestern road trip that feels like the Old West and the great unknown rolled into one. From thriving Native American cultures to explosively flavorful cuisine and otherworldly landscapes above and below ground, New Mexico rewards the curious at every turn,” a Lonely Planet journalist wrote.

Editors classified the region as the best option for cosmic road-tripping. Ample dark skies and stargazing opportunities supported that title.

The travel outlet created an activity guide for visitors across the state. It listed several specific outdoor stops:

  • Hike in the Sandia Mountains
  • Sled down dunes at White Sands National Park
  • Take a scenic drive on the Turquoise Trail
  • Explore the Taos Pueblo through a guided tour
  • Visit ancient dwellings at Bandelier National Monument

Another journalist noted historic art sites and Route 66 routes.

“In New Mexico, the 47th state, you can explore petroglyphs and ancient adobe pueblos, visit old cathedrals and hundreds of art galleries or head off into the wilderness on desert trails to soaring granite rocks, before driving through maroon mesas to retro joints on Route 66,” one Lonely Planet journalist posted.

The roster also included several other domestic locations across the country. Maryland earned recognition for underground Railroad history and Chesapeake flavors. Miami offered stylish spa stays for arriving guests.

Tourists can find scenic flights across Alaska. Rose Island in Rhode Island provides stays inside a historic lighthouse. California offers Redwood Parks with tall coastal forests.

International spots earned spots on the global roster too. Writers selected Killary Fjord in Ireland. They also chose Okinawa in Japan for future travel plans.

Travel guides assemble destination rosters to assist tourists with itinerary planning. Writers evaluate regional sights and historical venues before publishing their recommendations. These overviews outline local activities for domestic and international travelers.

The complete travel catalog remains available on the company website.
