New Mexico awards $385,785 to 33 schools to restrict phone use

Thirty-three New Mexico schools received state funding to buy lockable phone pouches and lockers. The program helps teachers keep students focused on class lessons instead of personal screens. The grants provide $385,785 across the state.

The New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion developed the grant program. The agency partnered directly with the New Mexico Public Education Department. State leaders want to curb nonacademic screen time during regular school hours.

Andrew Wilder serves as the broadband office policy and programs bureau chief. “Parents and teachers know how much of a distraction personal devices can be, so this funding will provide schools with the tools they need to keep students engaged,” Wilder said.

Recipients created policies to prevent students from accessing personal electronics during instruction. Schools will use lockable pouches and lockers. Some districts will also use network hardware and software to restrict website availability.

Public Education Secretary Mariana Padilla supported the equipment purchases. “Reducing digital distractions gives students more time to focus on learning and connect with their teachers and classmates,” Padilla said.

The Public Education Department oversees public school policies across New Mexico. State agencies frequently partner to provide technology resources to local school districts. These initiatives help educators manage classroom environments.

The state education department will oversee and manage the new school rules. Device restrictions will take effect across participating districts.
