Jennifer and Kevin Box origami sculptures open at Albuquerque BioPark
Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box have brought their metal sculpture exhibition to Albuquerque. The show titled “Origami in the Garden” opens Thursday and runs through March 28, 2027.
The event marks the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden’s first traveling exhibition of this kind. Guests can view 14 outdoor sculptures and four indoor works. Each piece is modeled from paper origami artwork.
The art pieces vary in size. They range from a tiny seven-inch mouse to a large white Pegasus named “Hero’s Horse”. That sculpture stands more than 12 feet tall and weighs 1,350 pounds.
Artist Kevin Box praised the outdoor venue for the visual display.
“It’s a compelling opportunity to see an incredible sculpture show right here in Albuquerque in this outdoor museum we call a botanic garden. It’s a very unique space to see origami, not just indoors, but outdoors,” said artist Kevin Box.
The first traveling exhibition opened at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in 2014. Over 3 million visitors have experienced the works in gardens and museums throughout the United States since then.
Botanic gardens maintain living plant collections for public education and outdoor cultural exhibitions. The Albuquerque BioPark manages public botanical and zoological spaces for the community.
A permanent sculpture garden also operates seasonally in Cerrillos, New Mexico. Those pieces remain on view at the Box Studio Sculpture Garden.
