New Mexico will open 2024 personal income tax filing on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, the state’s Taxation and Revenue Department announced. Both state and federal returns are due Tuesday, April 15, and New Mexico follows Internal Revenue Service rules on extensions.
Every New Mexico resident, every person with income from a New Mexico source, and every person required to file a federal income tax return must also file a New Mexico Personal Income Tax Return, known as Form PIT-1.
Returns can be filed online for free through the state’s Taxpayer Access Point website, known as TAP, or submitted online through accepted software providers including TurboTax, FreeTaxUSA and TaxWise. Paper returns can also be mailed. The Taxation and Revenue Department recommends electronic filing, which the state says tends to be quicker and more accurate.
To file by mail, filers can print forms from the department’s website, order blank forms by calling 1-866-285-2996, or pick them up at a local library. Completed returns without payment should be mailed to NM Taxation and Revenue Dept., P.O. Box 25122, Santa Fe, NM 87504-5122. Completed returns with payment should be mailed to NM Taxation and Revenue Dept., P.O. Box 8390, Santa Fe, NM 87504-8390.
The state recommends filing the federal return first, since that information is needed for the New Mexico return. For the first time, New Mexico is participating in Direct File, a free federal filing service that imports information directly into the state return.
Free tax help is available for older adults in Albuquerque through the City of Albuquerque and the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. AARP membership is not required. The program runs from Wednesday, Jan. 29, through April 15.
