Albuquerque firefighters climb 110 flights for 9/11 memorial

Albuquerque Fire Rescue held its annual memorial stair climb on Friday to honor the first responders who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. AFR firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs at the WaFd building, a tradition that begins at 8:46 a.m., the moment the first plane struck the twin towers.

“This memorial stair climb goes back to 2003 when Lieutenant John was employed and took it upon himself to climb two stories 55 times,” said Albuquerque Fire Rescue Lt. Jason Fejer. “So every year since 2003 this has gone on for Albuquerque.”

The climb is held each year at the WaFd building.

Following the climb, a ceremony was held on Civic Plaza to remember the victims of the September 11 attacks. The ceremony included a fly-over and a 21-gun salute.
