UNM women’s golf opens season hosting 13-team field in Albuquerque

The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is set to open its season Monday hosting a 13-team field at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque. The tournament runs through Tuesday and includes reigning Mountain West Conference champion UNLV.

Head coach Jill Trujillo said it is too early to identify specific weaknesses with the first tournament still ahead. The Lobos have continued emphasizing fundamentals that can make a difference over a tournament.

“We always work hard on short game, inside 100 yards, putting,” Trujillo said.

Player Ciara Rushmer said stamina and recovery will be especially important as the team navigates a demanding schedule.

“It’s all about stamina,” Rushmer said. “It’s 36 holes and 18, so who can fuel themselves the longest, who can rest well and recover.”

The Lobos enter the season with several new faces on the roster. Player Chelsea Truong said the team has been working hard despite the changes.

“We’ve had quite a few new girls this year, but we’ve been working hard,” Truong said. “I’m excited to see how this tournament goes and the rest of our season.”

Hosting the tournament gives UNM a chance to open the season on its home course against a field that includes one of the Mountain West’s top programs.
