New Mexicans can begin filing their 2024 state personal income tax returns on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, and for the first time the state is participating in Direct File, a free federal filing service. Both state and federal returns are due Tuesday, April 15, though the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers extension options that New Mexico follows.
Every New Mexico resident, person with income from a New Mexico source, and person required to file a federal income tax return must also file a New Mexico Personal Income Tax Return, known as “Form PIT-1,” according to the Taxation and Revenue Department.
Taxpayers can file online for free through the state’s Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) website or through accepted software providers such as TurboTax, FreeTaxUSA and TaxWise. Paper returns are also accepted by mail. The state recommends electronic filing, as that process “tends to be quicker and more accurate.”
For paper filing, blank forms can be printed from the department’s website, ordered by calling 1-866-285-2996, or picked up at a local library. Completed returns without payment should be mailed to NM Taxation and Revenue Dept., P.O. Box 25122, Santa Fe, NM 87504-5122. Returns with payment should be mailed to NM Taxation and Revenue Dept., P.O. Box 8390, Santa Fe, NM 87504-8390.
Filers should complete their federal return first, since that information is needed for the state return. Direct File imports information directly to the state return, making state filing simpler.
The forms required vary based on income sources, deductions, credits, exemptions and other factors. Most online platforms guide filers through questions and complete the necessary paperwork automatically. Paper filers can use the Personal Income Tax Return Instructions to determine which forms to submit.
Free tax help is available in Albuquerque through the City of Albuquerque and the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. AARP membership is not required. The program runs from Wednesday, Jan. 29, through April 15.
