Elon Musk became the largest known midterm donor in a New York report ahead of federal filing deadlines. The spending aims to protect Republican majorities in Congress through hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions. The total spending exceeds $276 million given since July.
Andrew Romeo confirmed the contribution totals. He speaks for Musk’s super PAC. The figures were first reported by the New York Times.
The total includes several large donations to conservative groups:
- $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund
- $76 million to America PAC
- $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC
The Senate Leadership Fund is the main super PAC that supports Republican Senate candidates. The donation ranks among the largest known political gifts in American history. Lone Star Liberty PAC backs Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
America PAC built a major turnout operation for the midterm races. The group ran a similar voter effort to support President Donald Trump in 2024. Musk is the only trillionaire in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
Musk had previously stated an intention to cut political spending last May.
“I think I’ve done enough,” Musk said at the time.
Musk previously led the Department of Government Efficiency early in the second term of Trump. He had a falling out with Trump when leaving the post. The two men later reconciled.
Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science last week. Musk maintains a lower public profile than during the 2024 campaign, when he joined Trump at rallies.
The donations give Republicans a large cash advantage over Democrats. The party faces potential election losses linked to voter frustration over prices, presidential performance and the war with Iran.
A federal political action committee raises money to support political candidates and ballot efforts during election cycles. Organizations file disclosure reports with federal regulators before official deadlines in New York and across the country. These public records detail donor names and total contributions.
Musk reached a net worth of over $1 trillion again last week. Changes in stock values have shifted his overall wealth around that level throughout the year.
