Lindsay Clancy civil lawsuit claims denied by Providence hospital

Lindsay Clancy faces a formal claim denial from a Providence hospital in her civil negligence lawsuit. The Massachusetts mother is accused of strangling her three young children before her criminal trial ended in a mistrial.

In a recent court filing, Women & Infants Hospital denied every allegation in her civil complaint. The lawsuit names several treating doctors and the medical facilities where they practiced.

Clancy alleged medical staff overmedicated her. She also alleged staff mismanaged her psychiatric care.

According to the lawsuit, Clancy entered a partial hospitalization program at the facility in Providence. Staff discharged her after a single day.

The filing claims clinicians decided her symptoms stemmed from medications rather than depression. The lawsuit alleges doctors failed to refer her to a more suitable facility.

Prosecutors previously argued Clancy strangled 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan in a planned attack. Her defense team argued postpartum psychosis made her not criminally responsible. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington later questioned her confession.

A civil medical lawsuit allows plaintiffs to seek financial damages for alleged professional negligence. Hospital legal filings formally respond to each specific claim in a patient complaint. State prosecutors evaluate evidence separately before deciding on a retrial.

Jurors in the criminal case had deadlocked 11 to 1 before that mistrial. Officials have not determined whether the state will retry Clancy on the criminal charges. The civil case against the Providence medical center moves forward separately.
