Two inmates have died in unrelated incidents at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, jail officials said Monday. The deaths will be monitored by local law enforcement and are under investigation by the MDC Office of Professional Standards.
The first inmate who died was identified by officials as 57-year-old Elliott Scott Sanchez. He was booked into jail last Tuesday.
At about 2 p.m. on Thursday, a medical emergency code was called regarding an inmate in medical distress, officials said. Personnel and a medical team responded and administered life-saving measures. Sanchez was taken to UNM Hospital and was pronounced dead at about 3:30 p.m.
The second inmate was identified as 37-year-old Charles P. Jaramillo. He was most recently booked into jail on June 15 and was approved for the MDC Community Custody Program last Tuesday. Officials said he died three days later on Friday.
According to officials, inmates can be placed on the Community Custody Program while they are awaiting the resolution of their court case. Judges also have the option to place an inmate on the program to serve out their sentence rather than being physically incarcerated at MDC.
On Friday, Jaramillo was scheduled for an alcohol test at 10 p.m., officials said. Officers were notified that the alcohol test was not conducted. Officers attempted to send Jaramillo a message through his GPS monitoring system to contact the CCP office, but the message was not acknowledged or returned.
The lack of response prompted officers to track Jaramillo to his most recent location. Upon arrival, officers found Albuquerque police on scene, who told them that Jaramillo had already been pronounced dead at about 11:40 p.m.
Because the incident happened outside of MDC, the facility has no additional details about his death.
Officials said the official causes and manners of death will be determined by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
