iOS 27 began rolling out to qualifying Apple devices on Monday, the company’s second update under its new naming system. Users may notice their iPhone or iPad battery draining faster than usual in the days following installation.
Apple warns on its support page that major updates can temporarily reduce battery life and increase heat. The company attributes the change to background tasks that run after installation, including indexing files, downloading new assets and updating apps.
“Immediately after completing an update, particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance,” Apple says. “This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background.”
The effect typically lasts only a few days while the device finishes behind-the-scenes work. Apple also cautions that how a person uses their phone matters. Exploring the new iOS 27 features can contribute to faster battery drain.
The update is large, requiring several gigabytes of free space on an iPhone or other Apple device before installation.
Apple recommends not charging the device to 100% during this period. The company and other phone makers generally advise charging only to 80% to extend battery life.
