New Mexico Lions Clubs collect nearly 10,000 items in food drive

New Mexico Lions Clubs held their second annual statewide food drive Saturday, collecting nearly 10,000 food items for local food banks and pantries. The drive helps organizations like East Mountain Food Pantry feed community members in need across the state.

KR Scott, a member of the Edgewood Lions Club, said the help is becoming more vital. “The increase of need is so great,” Scott said.

Scott cited figures from Feeding America. “The statistics we’re getting from Feeding America is that one of every four children in New Mexico goes to bed hungry,” Scott said. “One of every six families don’t have enough food to get through the day, so places like East Mountain Food Pantry are vital to keep our community alive and going.”

The drive was the second annual statewide effort. Last year’s food drive also collected nearly 10,000 food items.

New Mexico’s Lions Clubs are part of the International Lions Service Organization and have several locations across the state.
