Monsoon moisture brings daily storms to New Mexico this week

Daily shower and thunderstorm chances will spread across New Mexico this week as the monsoon high shifts toward the southeastern United States. The pattern change is expected to send plentiful moisture into the state, with scattered to widespread storm coverage forecast through at least Friday.

Overnight storms dropped heavy rainfall in spots around the state, prompting the National Weather Service to issue flood alerts for a few areas. Locally heavy rainfall is expected with the pattern, raising flash flooding concerns in locations with saturated soils from repeated rounds of rainfall.

“The moisture streaming into New Mexico is expected to bring cloudier skies in addition to the rainfall,” the forecast team reported.

The clouds and rain will also bring cooler temperatures after a record-setting day in Albuquerque. The city set a new record high of 94 degrees, beating the previous record of 93 degrees set in 2021. The high also marked the 100th day this year that temperatures reached 90 degrees or warmer in the Duke City, the most on record.

Highs will dip into the 70s and 80s for a majority of New Mexico by Thursday. Yesterday, southeastern communities including Roswell and Carlsbad reached triple digits again.

Forecasters expect the surplus of moisture, rain, and storms to contribute to the cooler temperatures across the state.
