Abhijeet Dipke and Cockroach movement leaders released in New Delhi
Abhijeet Dipke walked out of detention in New Delhi on Sunday with two fellow protest figures. Their release followed a massive police crackdown on demonstrations over purged voter rolls. The group promised to continue demonstrations.
The activists lead the Cockroach Janata Party. The other two freed members are Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Movement legal director Ratna Singh announced the release on social media. Singh said authorities required no breach of peace for one year. It remained unclear whether the condition limits protest activity.
Police boarded the organizers’ flight from Mumbai on Saturday. Officers detained them immediately after the plane touched down in New Delhi. The men planned to lead a demonstration in the capital.
Dipke criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi online following the release. He called Modi an embarrassment to the country on X.
Das spoke to reporters on Sunday. He urged supporters to march openly.
“A situation has been created where the state is at war with its own citizens,” Das told reporters Sunday.
Demonstrators want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Authorities removed over 130 million voters from registration rolls since last year. Critics call the purge politically motivated.
Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party denies allegations of manipulation. The Election Commission also denies the claims. The ruling party said the revision removes duplicate and ineligible names.
Officers launched a broad security operation on Saturday across New Delhi. Police detained more than 2,000 protesters. Opposition lawmakers were among those taken into custody.
Transit officials canceled trains into the capital. Workers closed metro stations, and officials cut mobile internet across parts of the city. Most detained demonstrators were released late Saturday, police said.
The initiative started online as a satirical campaign. India’s chief justice had compared unemployed youth to parasites. Young people adopted the insect as a resilience symbol.
The campaign previously forced the resignation of Modi’s education minister in July. Modi has led the government for over 12 years.
The Election Commission manages federal and state voting rolls across the country. Police agencies often impose peace bonds during public demonstrations. Detainees must avoid unlawful acts to maintain their liberty.
Activists plan further action across New Delhi in the coming days.
