Elizabeth Ortiz Chavez sentenced in fatal downtown Albuquerque alley shooting
Elizabeth Ortiz Chavez was sentenced Thursday in Albuquerque to 18 years in prison for second-degree murder. The court hearing closed the criminal case in the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Josue Ruiz.
Ortiz Chavez entered a guilty plea in January for the killing. Investigators initially arrested her 16-year-old son, Angelo Baldonado.
Baldonado faced charges for shooting and killing Josue Ruiz during a fight. That brawl took place in the alley behind Lindy’s Diner in Albuquerque. Later, witnesses told police that Ortiz Chavez arranged the brawl. Witnesses said she fired the fatal shot. Ortiz Chavez then framed her son to take the blame, according to witnesses.
Family members and friends of Ruiz spoke during the Thursday court proceeding. Family friend Jennifer Gutierrez shared memories of Ruiz with the court.
“He was awesome. He was a clown, loved to laugh, loved his family, was raised with morals and ethics, and had dreams for his life,” Gutierrez said.
A second-degree murder conviction carries mandatory prison terms under state law. Corrections officials process convicted defendants through regional intake facilities after sentencing.
Ortiz Chavez will serve her complete 18-year term in state custody.
