State officials selected Hartman + Majewski Design Group to produce a detailed master plan for the Expo New Mexico property in Albuquerque. The blueprint will guide new construction across more than 200 acres in the city’s International District. The design covers a new park and pedestrian improvements. It also includes mixed housing, commercial space and a sports stadium.
The multi-year construction project is projected to support about 940 jobs annually over 30 years, according to a news release from the governor’s office.
“We’re making steady progress on the State Fairgrounds, and each step brings us closer to the day when families in the International District can take pride in a revitalized neighborhood that’s safer and provides more economic, recreational and cultural opportunities for all who call the area home,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham stated in part in the news release.
The state General Services Department issued a request for proposals for an anchor developer. Officials plan to choose the building firm in December. The builder will use the master plan to construct Phase One. That initial phase could include housing, parks, an event center and a stadium.
The General Services Department will oversee construction and project development in Albuquerque. Hartman + Majewski Design Group previously completed several major New Mexico facility projects. The firm worked on UNM’s Anderson Student Financial Services Center. It designed the New Mexico State Police District 1 facility. The team also planned work at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe.
State agencies regularly use competitive bidding to choose licensed architecture and building firms for public land redevelopments. Selected planning teams draft blueprints that outline site layouts, zoning uses, utility systems and phased construction schedules. General contractors then use those final plans to build the public infrastructure and facilities.
Work continues on the site layout. The state will announce the anchor builder later this year.
