Flash flood emergency issued for Mora County, New Mexico

A flash flood emergency is in effect for Mora County, New Mexico, with flooding closing roads and forcing the high school to switch to remote learning. Water has entered Mora High School’s gym and recreation area, officials said, though it has not reached classrooms.

Mora High School announced the flooding in a social media post on Tuesday. School officials said Wednesday will be a remote learning day because of continued moisture and flooding concerns.

New Mexico Highway 94 is flooded with rapidly moving water between Mile Markers 14 and 16, near Ledoux. County Road A005, also known as Monte Aplanado Road, is also flooded.

Travellers are asked to avoid the area between Ledoux and Mora, use alternate routes if available, and not go around barricades or road closures. Morphy Lake State Park has been closed because the road has flooded and become impassable.

The Mora Senior Center has been opened as an evacuation centre. KRQE News is keeping up to date with flooding in Mora as the situation develops.

Mora County sits in north-central New Mexico, east of Santa Fe. The region is prone to flash flooding after heavy rain, especially in low-lying valleys and along creeks that drain the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
