New Mexico monsoon brings more heavy rain, flood threat through Saturday (58)

An active monsoon pattern will continue across New Mexico through Saturday, bringing more rounds of showers and thunderstorms along with a threat for heavy rain and flash flooding. Widespread rainfall hit New Mexico on Wednesday as impressive monsoon moisture moved through the state.

Showers and storms will continue developing through Wednesday evening, with some rain likely lasting overnight. High resolution forecast models bring showers into the Albuquerque Metro after midnight Thursday morning. A broad area of rain is also likely again to start the day across northern and western New Mexico.

Another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms is expected Thursday afternoon. Western and central New Mexico will once again have the highest chances for heavy rain. Storms will generally move north-northeast, but repeated storms over the same areas could still lead to flash flooding.

Rain chances will begin to come down Friday as slightly drier air moves into western New Mexico. Scattered storms will still develop across central and eastern parts of the state, and some could still produce locally heavy rain. There is also another good chance for showers and storms in the Albuquerque Metro Friday.

Drier weather will gradually move in this weekend. Storm coverage will decrease Saturday, with only a few spotty rain chances expected by Sunday across most of New Mexico.

Another increase in monsoon moisture could arrive early next week with a low pressure system approaching from the west. That could bring a return to more widespread showers and thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday, along with another potential increase in heavy rain and flash flooding, and even cooler temperatures.
