Man dies in Kirtland deputy-involved shooting, sheriff says

A man died in a deputy-involved shooting in Kirtland, New Mexico, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday. The shooting happened Monday evening after deputies were called to a reported domestic violence disturbance at the Dollar General in Kirtland, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to the store at about 8:37 p.m. While deputies were speaking with the victim, the suspect returned to the store.

According to the sheriff’s office, he came towards deputies with a knife above his head.

“Deputies made multiple commands to stop and drop the knife, however, the suspect ignored the commands and continued moving towards the deputies with the knife. A deputy discharged his sidearm, striking the suspect,” the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release on Tuesday.

The man died at the scene.

The deputy involved is currently on administrative leave.

The investigation is being led by the Farmington Police Department.
