La Plata County Road 329 closed indefinitely after heavy rain, officials say
La Plata County Road 329 is closed indefinitely after sustaining “significant structural damage” from persistent heavy rain, county officials said. The closure affects drivers east of Highway 151, south of Allison and east of Tiffany, according to a Tuesday news release from La Plata County.
The washout was caused by a failed culvert, officials said. The county’s Road & Bridge Department will assess the damage and determine a timeline for repairs.
The road sits about 45 minutes southeast of Durango and a few miles north of the New Mexico border.
County officials asked the public to drive carefully as more heavy rain is in the forecast. Drivers are advised to avoid standing water, watch for mud and debris, and slow down on slick roads.
Free sandbags are being offered to county residents on a self-serve basis to help protect property from potential flood damage. The sand and bags are available 24 hours a day, officials said.
Sandbags can be picked up at the following locations:
- La Plata County Fairgrounds (north lot near the rodeo arena), 2500 Main Ave., Durango.
- Upper Pine Fire Protection District Station 1, 75 South Clover Dr., Bayfield.
- Ignacio High School, 315 Ignacio St., Ignacio.
Residents are advised to bring their own shovels, as they may not be provided.
