Albuquerque police: armed suspect had loaded gun during downtown chase

Albuquerque police arrested a man who they say was armed during a pursuit in downtown Albuquerque on Aug. 8. Officers recovered a loaded handgun from his hand during a chase that began near 4th Street and Central Avenue, according to police.

Police shared video of the chase on social media Monday. Officers responded to a report of a man displaying a gun in the area, according to APD.

Officers located Elijah Herrera, 20, running from the area, and they chased him into a nearby parking lot, where they were able to take him into custody, police said.

A Glock 26 9mm handgun, with a round in the chamber and 17 additional rounds in the magazine, was recovered from Herrera’s hand, according to police.

During the booking process, officers also found suspected cocaine residue on two dollar bills in Herrera’s wallet. A field test returned a presumptive positive result for cocaine, APD said.

Herrera was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on charges of unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer.

The charges were later dismissed without prejudice by the prosecution.
