Roman Cerna resentenced to 15 years in Albuquerque murder case
An Albuquerque man was once again sentenced to prison on Monday after the New Mexico Supreme Court reversed his first-degree murder conviction earlier this year. The resentencing follows a high court ruling that said prosecutors failed to prove the man acted with deliberate intent, the standard required for a first-degree murder conviction.
In 2020, Roman Cerna shot and killed Chance Elkshoulder outside a smoke shop near San Pedro and Kathryn in Albuquerque. Cerna was arrested in 2023 and received a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder.
The state Supreme Court reversed that conviction and ordered the Second Judicial District Court to enter a judgment of second-degree murder against Cerna.
On Monday, Cerna was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Judge David Murphy.
