Tropics quiet in Tampa after record Hurricane Isaias batters Florida

Conditions across the tropical Atlantic turned calm near Tampa following major impacts from Hurricane Isaias. The powerful system made history as the latest-forming hurricane on record.

The storm intensified quickly in the Gulf. It reached Category 3 major hurricane status during its approach. The system weakened some near land. It made landfall in Destin on Friday night as a Category 2 storm.

Intense winds knocked out electricity to hundreds of thousands of people in Florida. The system later became a post-tropical cyclone. It dumped heavy rain across the southeast. It also spun up tornadoes.

Officials attributed at least four reported deaths to the weather event. Early Tuesday morning, the National Hurricane Center monitored another area of low pressure. That disturbance produced showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

The National Hurricane Center monitors weather disturbances and issues warnings for tropical systems. The agency tracks developing areas across ocean basins.

Forecasters expect that Atlantic system to encounter stronger upper-level winds. Development is no longer expected for the Tampa region or the broader basin.
