Nidal Malik Hasan convicted in Fort Hood shooting faces livestreamed execution
Nidal Malik Hasan faces a Dec. 3 firing squad execution at Fort Hood under military order. Child development experts urge parents to prepare for the prospect that footage could reach young viewers on social feeds.
Donald Trump approved the execution date at the Texas military post. The Pentagon announced days later that the event would be broadcast online. Trump said that he will soon make a decision on the plan.
Many details are not established. Officials have not stated if the moment of death will appear. Broadcast delay rules and age restrictions are also not established.
Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009. The former Army psychiatrist opened fire inside a medical building with a laser-sighted handgun. He said it was an effort to protect fellow Muslims in Afghanistan.
“People need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Real America’s Voice.
Experts warned that clips could spread across youth feeds even if restrictions exist. Jill Murphy of Common Sense Media advised adults to focus on reassurance.
“With young kids, parents should keep it short and focus on reassurance over explaining the events,” Murphy said. “Reassure them that they are safe.”
Dr. David Rosenberg of the Wayne State University School of Medicine urged parents to stay calm. He said adults should set clear boundaries on media.
Watch for signs of distress. Pittsburgh-area psychiatrist Timothy Lesaca cited studies linking repeated viewings of violent news to post-traumatic stress. He noted risks with traumatic events in an article on KevinMD.com.
Parents should watch for trouble sleeping and ongoing anxiety. Rosenberg noted that brains develop emotional control until around age 24.
The U.S. military has not executed a service member since 1961. Fort Hood serves as a major installation that processes deploying troops.
White House spokespeople did not answer emails regarding the prospect of children viewing the broadcast.
