Passenger train derails in Multan killing four and injuring 30

A passenger train derailed early Tuesday in Multan, leaving four people dead and 30 others injured. Rescuers evacuated victims from the damaged cars and sent wounded riders to a local hospital for urgent treatment. Emergency responders arrived quickly at the crash site.

The train was traveling from Karachi to Peshawar. It went off the tracks in Sher Shah city in Punjab province. Pakistan Railways spokesman Kaleem Akhtar reported these details.

Rescuers recovered all four bodies from the scene, Akhtar said. Crews evacuated the injured people from 14 train cars. Paramedics were dispatched directly to the area, Akhtar said.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief in separate statements. Both leaders urged authorities to provide the best possible medical care to every injured passenger.

Pakistan Railways operates thousands of miles of track across the nation. Government rail agencies coordinate emergency crews to clear tracks after major transport accidents.

Crews in Multan worked through the morning to secure the wreckage. Rail transport accidents remain frequent across the national railway system.
