Animal Humane New Mexico raises money in Albuquerque to rescue dogs
Animal Humane New Mexico is seeking funds in Albuquerque to transport six dogs affected by recent storms. The shelter stepped in after a Hawaii humane society reached out for help with the animals. They arrived this week.
The six dogs and puppies were flown to Denver. Many mainland shelters offered space for cats and kittens. Animal Humane New Mexico agreed to accept dogs.
A crew hopes to drive shelter vehicles to Denver from Albuquerque. The group plans to transport the pets directly back to the state.
“The airline bringing these dogs to the mainland doesn’t fly to New Mexico. The closest airport they fly to is in Denver, Colorado. Our team plans to drive shelter vehicles to Denver just to bring them home to New Mexico. It’s a big undertaking. But six lives are counting on us, and we’re not going to back down from a challenge when animals need our help. First, however, we need to raise $3,000 in the next 24 hours to get the rescue underway,” Animal Humane New Mexico wrote in an email.
Animal shelters coordinate across state lines during major natural disasters. Mainland rescue teams often provide open kennel space when island facilities reach full capacity.
People can make donations online to help the Albuquerque shelter reach its target. The money funds vehicle travel for the transfer.
