One dead after crash closes I-40 in Bernalillo County

A person died Saturday evening during a collision on Interstate 40 in Bernalillo County. All six traffic lanes were closed in both directions between Route 66 Casino and NM 6.

Bernalillo County deputies arrived at the site on Saturday evening. A passenger vehicle collided with a semi-truck near the Route 66 Casino. All eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down.

Deputies confirmed the single fatality on Saturday evening. The crash remains under active investigation by deputies. Officials have not released the identity of the deceased individual.

Road closures were expected to cause “significant delays” in both directions, deputies said. Officials urged motorists to avoid the immediate area. Drivers should seek alternate routes. Extended travel times are expected.

Interstate 40 serves as a primary east-west highway across Bernalillo County. Law enforcement agencies typically shut down travel corridors to conduct collision reconstruction investigations.

Deputies noted that the event remains an ongoing incident.
