Linkin Park documentary explores emotional return to music in Los Angeles

Musician Mike Shinoda is featured in a new film in Los Angeles about his band’s restart. The project shows the grief and creative decisions behind the group’s choice to perform again.

The film, titled “Linkin Park: Unshatter,” is now in theaters. Joe Hahn and Mark Ritchie co-directed the film. It shows early studio footage and talks that led to Emily Armstrong joining as co-lead vocalist.

Linkin Park formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The band fused alternative metal, hip-hop and electronics. Their 2000 debut, “Hybrid Theory,” gained diamond certification. The band followed that release with the album “Meteora.”

Frontman Chester Bennington died by suicide in 2017. His death followed the release of “One More Light.” The band faced an uncertain future for years.

Shinoda met Armstrong in 2019. She was the lead singer and co-founder of Dead Sara. Shinoda said he had a gut feeling she needed to meet the other members.

“Emotional stuff aside, which was very heavy … I was like, ‘If we ever were to do it again, I wouldn’t want to assume that it had to be a guy.’ I wouldn’t want to assume it has to be who somebody who’s sang like Chester.”

The band returned in 2024 with Armstrong. They released the album “From Zero” and started new world tours. Shinoda said he wanted to keep an open mind about the future.

Armstrong said joining the group was a creative risk. She watched the early encounters captured in the movie.

“I feel like I look a lot more confident than I actually was. There was so much going on in my head, having to step up to the plate, right?”

Hahn serves as DJ and creative director. He said making music again helped the band heal.

“I think we were able to lean on each other and be open just to start healing, and then with that you give each other encouragement, too, like, ‘Hey, you’re good at this.’ “

Music documentaries offer behind-the-scenes access to creative recording sessions. Film directors often combine private archive footage with fresh interviews. These projects show how performers manage major career shifts.

The band continues its world tours after launching the new project in Los Angeles.
