LeBron James makes preseason debut for Philadelphia 76ers in New York
LeBron James played his first exhibition game for Philadelphia on Thursday night in New York. The 41-year-old forward is starting his NBA-record 24th season.
James joined the Philadelphia 76ers this summer on a two-year deal for the league minimum. He spent the last eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James scored 10 points, had five assists and grabbed four rebounds during the first half against the Brooklyn Nets. The 76ers held a 58-56 lead at halftime.
James played 18 minutes. He took only one shot from the field, drew four fouls and made all eight free throws. He did not attempt a shot until drawing a foul with 4:54 left in the first quarter.
Philadelphia started Jaylen Brown alongside James. Returners Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe completed the starting lineup in New York.
Maxey scored 14 points in the contest. Every other starter scored at least six points.
The 76ers missed their opening shot after a low pass from James. Embiid caught the ball off-balance and missed on a turnaround jumper. Philadelphia then made seven consecutive shots.
Coach Nick Nurse said he planned to play the starters for about half of the game.
Most starters sat out a preseason opening win against the New York Knicks on Monday. Embiid, Brown and Edgecombe remained on the floor to start the second half on Thursday.
Preseason games allow NBA franchises to test player rotations and build team chemistry. These exhibition matches do not count toward official regular-season standings.
Philadelphia has two remaining preseason games against the Boston Celtics. The 76ers will play their regular season opener on Oct. 20 in New York.
