Dolores Berg worked to house hundreds of tourists during the 1991 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in Belen. The surge of travelers filled area lodging and provided key financial support to local enterprises.
Hundreds of hot air balloons launched 40 miles to the north. Berg faced constant inquiries from stranded visitors who needed a place to stay.
Berg noted that reservation requests overwhelmed her business since about the fourth day of the month.
“Ever since about the fourth, we have been turning people down and just phone calls alone have like been hundreds of people that we have had to say no to for reservations,” Berg said.
Every room was booked across all five motels in the community. No rooms were available.
One motel operator had to redirect a traveler to Santa Rosa. That driver could not find an available bed within a 100-mile radius.
“It’s fantastic,” the operator said.
Most lodging options between Santa Fe and Socorro were reserved six months early. The hospitality rush also spread to regional transportation companies.
Baca Auto had vehicles available for purchase. The company had no rental cars available until the celebration ended.
“They’re all out,” the owner at Baca Auto said. “They’re all reserved out, or they’re all out, so it’s good.”
The municipal government in Belen faced severe budget challenges during the prior year. The city government almost had to file for bankruptcy.
The annual event provided valuable commercial activity for merchants across the city. The automotive business owner praised the widespread benefits.
“The Balloon Fiesta helps all the businesses in the city,” the owner at Baca Auto said. “The restaurants, the motels, it’s unbelievable.”
Local business owners hoped organizers would expand the schedule or add fresh community attractions. High demand continued.
“If we build it, they will come,” one hotel owner said. “Field of dreams, it’s here. We have to have more of it.”
Municipalities often rely on seasonal tourism from regional festivals to support local tax revenue and merchants. Increased visitor traffic helps small towns offset earlier municipal budget deficits.
The community in Belen continues to welcome commercial growth from future gatherings of the regional festival.
