Former corrections officer Jared Apodaca was sentenced to prison in Santa Fe for raping an inmate. The punishment includes three years behind bars followed by probation, parole terms and lifelong sex offender registry requirements.
A judge ordered Apodaca to serve the three-year term in the New Mexico Department of Corrections. His prison time will be followed by five to 20 years of probation.
He must also serve between five years and life on parole. Apodaca will register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He must pay restitution to the victim.
On July 30, 2026, Apodaca pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual penetration. The charge involved a position of authority over an inmate. The incident occurred in August 2023.
He worked at the Santa Fe Adult Detention Center when the crime occurred. He is no longer employed there.
The New Mexico Department of Corrections oversees state prison facilities and manages felony supervision. Inmates serving felony prison terms are transferred to state custody after sentencing. Restitution helps victims recover direct costs resulting from a crime.
Apodaca remains under supervision following his state prison term in Santa Fe.
