New Mexico United clinches playoff spot with 2-1 Albuquerque win

New Mexico United earned a postseason spot Saturday night after defeating Phoenix Rising in Albuquerque. The team secured a 2-1 victory before its home crowd at The Lab.

United scored quickly to open the match. Just five minutes in, Dennis sent a fast break forward to Greg Hurst. Hurst put the ball into the net for an early 1-0 advantage.

Both defensive units settled in after the opening strike. Phoenix later scored an equalizer to tie the match. The game remained deadlocked late into the second half.

The decisive breakthrough occurred in the 80th minute. Christian Nava helped create the scoring chance. Cam Wilkerson fired the go-ahead goal high and fast to make it 2-1.

United defended the lead through the final whistle. Head coach Dennis Sanchez said the club controls its path in the Western Conference.

“Honestly, everything’s up for grabs right now,” Sanchez said. “We still very much control our own destiny. We know the West is tight, but really it’s about just going into playoffs in the best form possible.”

Sanchez praised his players for executing during the decisive sequence. He noted their calmness and composure in committing the defense and finding the open shooter.

Wilkerson described the win as progress toward larger objectives. He said reaching the postseason was the goal, and the performance served as another step forward.

Professional soccer teams compete across a regular season to earn berths in the playoff tournament. Advancing clubs then face off in elimination rounds to determine a league champion.

New Mexico United plays its next home game at The Lab against Monterey Bay Union. That match is scheduled for Saturday at 6:55 p.m. for Blackout Night in Albuquerque.
