Juvenile held in Hobbs middle school teacher shooting

A juvenile is in custody after a teacher was shot at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, police say. The teacher was found with multiple gunshot wounds and remains in stable condition, a school district spokesperson said Friday.

The shooting was reported just before 11:40 a.m. on Friday at the school, according to Hobbs police. Officers arrived within minutes and found the teacher with multiple gunshot wounds.

Kristy Hughes, Engagement and Strategic Communications Director with Hobbs Municipal Schools, confirmed the teacher is in stable condition. She said a juvenile is in custody. Police have not released the juvenile’s name or age.

The teacher has not been publicly identified. No further details about the circumstances of the shooting have been released.

In a social media post, Hobbs Municipal Schools announced the cancellation of Friday night’s Homecoming Parade. The planned Friday night football game was moved to 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Highland Middle School is part of the Hobbs Municipal Schools district in Hobbs, New Mexico. The city is located in Lea County near the Texas border.
