Driver charged with murder in LA bus crash that killed two

A driver was charged Thursday with two counts of second-degree murder in a Los Angeles crash that killed two people on a city bus. The collision set off a second deadly incident when a news helicopter covering it went down, killing three more people.

Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, was speeding and impaired when she drove a 2004 Ford Expedition the wrong way down a busy avenue, running a red light and striking a vehicle before plowing into the bus, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman told a news conference.

The two people killed on the bus were identified as Daniel Castillo, 46, and Gage Weida, 31.

Rios was being held on $4.1 million bail. She is scheduled to appear in court Friday. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had a lawyer.

The helicopter covering the crash caught fire after coming down, killing the two people on board and a man on the ground. The pilot was identified as George Marciniw and the reporter as Eliana Moreno. The man on the ground was identified as Edy Gutierrez Mejia.

At least four cars and two storage containers burned after the helicopter caught fire.
