Monsoon storms bring flash flood threat across New Mexico

Monsoon moisture is surging into New Mexico through Thursday, bringing widespread rain and a threat of heavy rainfall and flash flooding across much of the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue developing across western and central New Mexico through Tuesday evening, with slow storm movement raising the flash flood threat.

Atmospheric moisture over Albuquerque Tuesday afternoon was near record levels for this time of year, according to the report. A backdoor front moving into northeast New Mexico could also bring a few stronger storms Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Rain is forecast to become more widespread overnight, especially across the Albuquerque Metro and central New Mexico.

Wednesday is expected to be one of the wettest days of the week, with widespread showers and thunderstorms across western and central New Mexico and repeated rounds of heavy rain possible.

Monsoon moisture is forecast to remain over the state Thursday, bringing another round of scattered to widespread storms across western and northern New Mexico and along the central mountain chain.

Rain chances are expected to gradually decrease Friday into the weekend as drier air moves into western New Mexico.

Another backdoor front could bring increasing rain chances back to northeast and eastern New Mexico late Sunday into Monday.

Temperatures are expected to hover near to below average across much of the state through the weekend, with an overall cooling trend into early next week.
