Albuquerque metro braces for heavy rain and flash flooding through Thursday

Albuquerque and central New Mexico face heavy rain and flash flooding through Thursday as monsoon moisture surges across the state. The Albuquerque Metro and central New Mexico are expected to see the most widespread overnight rainfall, with repeated rounds of heavy rain possible Wednesday.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue developing across western and central New Mexico through Tuesday evening, according to the forecast. Storms will move slowly, increasing the threat of locally heavy rain and flash flooding. Atmospheric moisture over Albuquerque Tuesday afternoon was near record levels for this time of year.

A backdoor front moving into northeast New Mexico could also bring a few stronger storms Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Wednesday still looks like one of the wettest days of the week, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expected across western and central New Mexico.

Monsoon moisture will stay over New Mexico Thursday, bringing another round of scattered to widespread storms, especially across western and northern New Mexico and along the central mountain chain.

Rain chances will gradually decrease Friday into the weekend as drier air begins moving into western New Mexico. Another backdoor front could bring increasing rain chances back to northeast and eastern New Mexico late Sunday into Monday. Temperatures will hover near to below average across much of the state through the weekend, with an overall cooling trend into early next week.
