Albuquerque woman gets 12 years for child’s death

An Albuquerque woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison for her role in the death of a three-year-old girl, while a co-defendant received one and a half years. The state described the woman as the “ringleader” of the abuse that preceded the child’s death in 2024.

Christina Pena-Cantor and James Welch were both sentenced by Judge David Murphy, according to a report from Albuquerque.

In 2024, police said the child’s mother, Kerri Santos, brought her three-year-old daughter to University of New Mexico Hospital, saying she had fallen from a toilet. Doctors determined the girl was already dead.

Further examination revealed signs of abuse along with evidence of being tied up. Police learned Pena-Cantor was responsible for tying the girl up multiple times while staying at Welch’s home.

Pena-Cantor was the one deemed as the “ringleader” of the abuse according to the state. Welch was sentenced to one and a half years in prison.
