Albuquerque police arrest armed man after downtown pursuit

Albuquerque police arrested a 20-year-old man they say was armed during a pursuit in downtown Albuquerque in August. Officers took the man into custody after chasing him into a nearby parking lot.

Police said officers responded on August 8 to a report of a man displaying a gun near 4th Street and Central Avenue. Officers located Elijah Herrera running from the area, and a chase ended when officers caught him in a parking lot, police said.

A Glock 26 9mm handgun was recovered from Herrera’s hand, according to police. The gun had a round in the chamber and 17 additional rounds in the magazine.

During booking, officers also found suspected cocaine residue on two dollar bills in Herrera’s wallet. A field test returned a presumptive positive result for cocaine, APD said.

Herrera was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on charges of unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer. The charges were later dismissed without prejudice by the prosecution.
