Forecasters shift key Senate races toward Democrats ahead of election

Forecasters moved several Senate races toward Democrats in states including North Carolina and Kansas. Shifts came after updates from Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball. Both groups tracked changes less than a month before the election.

Ratings also moved in Alaska, New Hampshire and South Carolina. President Donald Trump faces falling approval numbers. High costs tied to the war in Iran affect Republican candidates. The tariff fight with Canada creates further obstacles.

Some Republican candidates have broken with the White House on selected topics. Forecasters note a favorable landscape for Democrats. A full Senate majority remains uncertain.

Key Contests Across Several Battleground States

In North Carolina, former Gov. Roy Cooper leads former Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley. Recent surveys show Cooper ahead by single or double digits. Both party super PACs altered spending there.

The Senate Leadership Fund reduced funds in the state. The Senate Majority PAC also cut back spending. Neither group withdrew entirely from the race.

In Alaska, former Rep. Mary Peltola challenges Sen. Dan Sullivan. Cook Political Report places the contest as a toss up. Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted the race to lean Democrat.

Trump won Alaska by 13 points in 2024. Vice President JD Vance has visited the state. The president scheduled a trip there this week.

Miles Coleman and Kyle Kondik from Sabato’s Crystal Ball noted older voter trends in an analysis.

“Though Alaska is, demographically, one of the youngest states, both the AARP poll and the more recent NYT poll show Sullivan carrying voters older than 45.”

A September survey from Quantus Insights found the race tied. The New York Times reported allegations about Peltola mistreating staff members. The Peltola campaign denied the accusations.

Ohio features a special election for the seat vacated by Vance. Sen. Jon Husted faces former Sen. Sherrod Brown. The contest polls within the margin of error.

Brown lost to Sen. Bernie Moreno during the 2024 election. Some voters still consider Brown the active senator. Husted remains less familiar to the public.

In Maine, Sen. Susan Collins faces former state Senate President Troy Jackson. Collins is the sole Senate Republican from a state won by former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jackson replaced Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee after Platner faced multiple scandals. Jackson attacked Collins over her vote for Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Democrats also cited a ProPublica report alleging improper defense contractor deals.

Collins called the claims a partisan hit and rejected them entirely. Her campaign noted the source of the report was a convicted felon. Polling shows a tight race in the Pine Tree State.

Michigan opened with the retirement of Sen. Gary Peters. Former Rep. Mike Rogers runs for Republicans against former Wayne County health director Abdul El-Sayed.

Rogers called for an end to the war in Iran. He also urged Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to settle the Canada tariff dispute.

Texas features Republican Ken Paxton against Democrat James Talarico. Trump called Paxton controversial during a state visit. The president urged Paxton to debate Talarico.

The ad-tracking firm AdImpact reported $51 million in future Republican ad spending in Texas. Democrats reserved roughly $5 million in that market.

Midwestern Contests Draw Increased Scrutiny

Iowa features Rep. Ashley Hinson running in a state that backed Trump by 13 points. Inside Elections rates the contest as tilt Republican. Cook Political Report shifted the race to a toss up.

Voters in the state express worry over gas and fertilizer prices. Hinson has asked Trump to end the war in Iran. Democrats hold an edge in future ad spending there.

In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton challenges Sen. Roger Marshall. Kansas has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932. Marshall faced questions regarding spending and medical debt lawsuits.

A lawyer for Marshall said the campaign adheres to ethics rules. Marshall defended his suits against medical debtors as appropriate. Hamilton addressed prior church abuse reporting issues with the Kansas Reflector.

In New Hampshire, former Sen. John E. Sununu challenges Democrat Chris Pappas. Gov. Kelly Ayotte shares the ballot on the Republican ticket. Cook Political Report analyst Jessica Taylor described Pappas as the current frontrunner.

Parties also monitor races in Minnesota, Nebraska, Georgia and South Carolina. These states tilt toward regular party lines. Major surprises in those areas would indicate wider shifts.

Congressional elections take place across multiple state districts every two years to establish legislative majorities. Nonpartisan analysts evaluate polling figures and fundraising totals to assign competitiveness ratings to each campaign.

Decisions by national political committees determine where advertising resources flow in the final weeks before voting concludes.
