Russian strikes hit energy sites in Kyiv and Kharkiv despite ceasefire
U.S. President Donald Trump said Ukraine and Russia agreed to halt attacks on energy sites. The announcement came despite Ukrainian officials reporting fresh strikes in Kyiv and Kharkiv. Trump posted Sunday that the agreement took effect immediately. “Do not break it!” he added on social media.
The Regional Prosecutor’s Office of Kharkiv said Russian forces struck a facility on the city outskirts Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that he welcomed the announcement. However, he noted Russia was still targeting power networks in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
Moscow did not immediately comment on the deal. Ukrainian officials said the strikes cut power, heat and water. They describe the tactic as weaponizing winter.
Ukraine has hit Russian energy sites like oil refineries. Trump blamed Zelenskyy for high U.S. diesel prices. The claims came weeks before U.S. midterm elections.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine would stop striking refineries if Moscow halted attacks. He asked Trump to press the Kremlin to agree. Trump made a similar claim on Sept. 14. That earlier proposal yielded no results.
European Officials Question Fuel Deal
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas spoke Monday in Luxembourg. She said she saw no sign Russia would respect a pause.
We haven’t yet seen that also Russia will stick to it. Personally, I would also welcome that the ceasefire would include people not being killed, not only energy.
Trump also agreed Friday to buy Russian diesel from President Vladimir Putin. European and Ukrainian officials said the purchases fund Moscow’s war effort. Several European foreign ministers doubted the deal would lower fuel costs.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said the purchase connects to domestic politics in the U.S. Kallas said only pressure on Russia can stop fighting. She also rejected Trump’s Saturday suggestion that Ukraine needs a new president.
Drone Strikes Target Multiple Regions
A Russian drone hit Pisochyn in the Kharkiv district Sunday. The attack killed three people. Nine others suffered injuries, including children.
The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said the strike hit at approximately 7:25 p.m. It damaged a populated area near apartments and grocery stores.
Ukraine’s Air Force said air defenses shot down or suppressed 89 of 121 drones overnight Monday. The assault included one Kh-59 guided missile and 76 jet-powered Shahed drones. Strikes hit 15 Ukrainian locations.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces intercepted 151 Ukrainian drones overnight Monday. These interceptions occurred over Russian regions, Crimea and the Black Sea. The ministry reported drone strikes on Ukraine’s port infrastructure and an Odesa-bound carrier.
International ceasefires require mutual monitoring between nations. Warring parties report breaches to diplomatic partners during ongoing disputes. Frontline monitors track damages to critical infrastructure.
Fighting continues across eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.
