Suspect held after Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber shot and killed

A suspect is in custody in Philadelphia after Officer Shane Seiber died in a shooting. The deadly gunfire also left a second officer injured early Saturday morning.

Both officers responded to a report of a man with a gun, police said. The shooting happened in west Philadelphia, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel.

Bethel said Seiber was killed. He was 40.

Seiber served as a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. Both wounded officers were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. They underwent surgery at the facility.

The surviving officer is in stable condition, Bethel said. Bethel also confirmed a suspect is in custody.

Gov. Josh Shapiro said he ordered flags to fly at half-mast for Seiber. Seiber is survived by his wife and two children. His children are a 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.

The Philadelphia Police Department investigates officer shootings in the city. Internal units typically review the scene alongside investigators. State officials may also direct honours for fallen personnel.

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect in custody. No further details were immediately available.
