Nine people died Friday during gunfire in Erie, Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday. Police reported the suspected shooter was also found dead.
The city of Erie posted late Friday night that the suspected shooter was dead. Officials announced there was no threat to the public.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah spoke to a local news station about the violence.
“I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years,” Lorah said. “I’m not sure that the city of Erie has ever seen the loss of life and the devastation that we just witnessed.”
Lorah declined to provide more details about the incident. He described the circumstances of the event as “deeply disturbing.”
Shapiro contacted city leaders on Saturday. He offered his administration’s “full support” to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin.
