Police search for suspect after fatal shooting in Bernalillo park

Officers are investigating a gunfire incident at Rotary Park in Bernalillo that left one person dead. A second victim suffered injuries during the violence and required hospital care. Investigators have not yet confirmed the identity of the shooter.

The first emergency call came in around 8:39 p.m. on Monday. Bernalillo Police Chief Chris Stoyell stated that two people were shot at the park.

One victim died from gunshot wounds. Medics took the second victim to a local hospital. Stoyell reported the injured person is in stable condition.

The agency has not released the name of the deceased victim. Stoyell told KRQE that officers are still searching for the suspect. They are working to confirm a description of the individual.

A social media post from the Bernalillo Police Department stated officers were pursuing a “potentially violent individual.” The agency issued a shelter-in-place order late Monday night. That order applied to Bernalillo residents living east of the Rio Grande.

Officials lifted the neighborhood order early Tuesday morning. No suspect has been caught.

Local law enforcement agencies handle emergency public notices during active threats. Officers secure public recreation sites to preserve physical evidence following violent incidents.
