Attorney General Raúl Torrez presented state legislation to regulate artificial intelligence companies in Santa Fe. The proposal establishes new rules for data privacy, transparency, and technology data centers.
Representative Linda Serrato joined Torrez to announce the proposed state measures. Lawmakers crafted the bill following a meeting between President Donald Trump and tech leaders across the United States.
Torrez voiced frustration with federal officials over their handling of risks from machine learning systems.
“The idea that we would allow this industry to police itself is ludicrous. It is absolutely unacceptable for a business that, by its own terms, potentially threatens the survival of our species to be bound by nothing more than their pinky promise is an insult.”
State lawmakers in Santa Fe review policy proposals during scheduled legislative sessions. Committees analyze draft language before bills move forward for floor votes. The measures can then pass into law.
Officials expect lawmakers to debate the measure during the next legislative session. Torrez said self-regulation fails the public.
