White Sands Missile Range first responders delivered a baby along U.S. Highway 70 near the missile range in New Mexico. The delivery happened early Tuesday when a woman in labor could not reach a hospital in time.
The birth took place around 3 a.m. on Sept. 22 along U.S. 70, according to the White Sands Professional Firefighters Association. It happened near mile marker 181, just outside White Sands National Park and a little over 30 miles northeast of Las Cruces.
In a 911 call, dispatch said a 28-year-old woman was in active labor and the baby may be stuck. A first responder later told dispatch the baby was out and crying.
The first responders who helped were identified as Dakota Moon and Austin Oblack, the firefighters association said in a Facebook post. White Sands Missile Range Lt. Persall held the infant, named Adaline, as crews tended to the mother.
White Sands National Park sits in south-central New Mexico. U.S. Highway 70 runs through the Tularosa Basin, connecting Las Cruces to Alamogordo.
