A sinkhole about a mile east of Redrock has closed both directions of U.S. Route 70 in Hidalgo County, the New Mexico Department of Transportation said. The closure runs from the intersection with NM Route 90 to the Arizona state line, and there is no nearby alternative route.
Officials said drivers should not attempt to travel through the closure.
Floodwaters also overtook a two-mile stretch of road in Farmington. New Mexico State Police said crews are expected to begin repairs on Thursday.
The Newcomb area saw flooding Wednesday evening. The Navajo Police Department shared photos of water damaging roads near Highway 491 and Road 9673. Drivers should avoid the area.
